July 2026: COLDCARD firmware generated weak seeds

A firmware build setting introduced in 2021 made COLDCARD devices generate seeds with a software random number generator instead of the hardware one. According to Coinkite, seeds created on the Mk4, Mk5 and Q carry about 72 bits of entropy rather than 128, and older Mk2/Mk3 firmware fared worse. Attackers began guessing and sweeping affected wallets on 30 July 2026; Galaxy Research confirmed more than 1,778 BTC stolen. Coinkite states the devices themselves were not hacked or remotely accessed.

Affected: seeds generated on Mk4/Mk5 firmware before 5.6.0, Q firmware before 1.5.0Q, Edge firmware before 6.6.0X / 6.6.0QX, and Mk2/Mk3 firmware 4.0.1–4.1.9. Seeds built from 50 or more private dice rolls are not at risk from this bug.

What Coinkite advises:

  • Install the fixed firmware before generating a new seed.
  • Move funds to a newly generated seed, even if you use a strong passphrase — updating firmware does not repair an existing seed.
  • Verify the new backup and a receive address on the device, send a small test transaction, then move the rest.

Current firmware is fixed; the risk remains for funds still held on seeds made with the affected versions.

Coinkite Coldcard Mk5 vs Ellipal Titan Mini: Frequently Asked Questions

Answers about Coinkite Coldcard Mk5 vs Ellipal Titan Mini

Is Coinkite Coldcard Mk5 better than Ellipal Titan Mini?
On the numbers, Coinkite Coldcard Mk5 comes out ahead — 67/100 vs 57/100 — but 'better' isn't quite the right frame. Ellipal Titan Mini is more affordable at $99, which matters more for some buyers than overall score does. If overall rating is what you actually weigh first, take Coinkite Coldcard Mk5. If budget is the constraint that shapes your decision, Ellipal Titan Mini is the smarter buy. Either way, both are real hardware wallets — neither is a mistake.
How much do Coinkite Coldcard Mk5 and Ellipal Titan Mini cost?
Coinkite Coldcard Mk5 costs $219, Ellipal Titan Mini costs $99. These are list prices for the standard edition from official manufacturer stores. A few things worth knowing: hardware wallet prices barely move during the year, so 'waiting for a sale' rarely pays off — Black Friday is the one exception, with 10–20% off being typical. Avoid third-party listings even if they're cheaper; the supply chain risk on a tampered device wipes out any savings the first time you load funds. And don't buy a 'used' hardware wallet, ever — even if it claims to be reset.
Which wallet is better for DeFi and Web3: Coinkite Coldcard Mk5 or Ellipal Titan Mini?
Ellipal Titan Mini — and the gap is bigger than the spec sheets make it look. Ellipal Titan Mini has WalletConnect built in, which means you sign DeFi transactions directly from a hardware wallet without exposing keys to a hot wallet. Coinkite Coldcard Mk5 can technically work with DeFi via third-party software, but every extra step is one more place an attacker can intercept the transaction you're approving. If you're going to be clicking 'Sign' on smart contracts more than once a month, the difference compounds fast.
Coinkite Coldcard Mk5 vs Ellipal Titan Mini: which has better backup options?
Coinkite Coldcard Mk5 uses a 24-word seed phrase with optional Shamir Secret Sharing for split backups. Ellipal Titan Mini uses a standard 12-word seed phrase. Both work — but they reflect different ideas about what 'backup' should be. The seed phrase approach (BIP-39) is the open industry standard: portable across most wallets, well-documented, and recoverable on any compatible device. The downside is well-known too — it's a piece of paper that's a single photograph or careless moment away from disaster. Card-based backups can't be photographed and don't write themselves down, but they're proprietary, which means you trust one manufacturer to stay in business and keep the format alive. Pick based on which failure mode worries you more.
Is Coinkite Coldcard Mk5 more secure than Ellipal Titan Mini because it's open-source?
Not automatically — and this is a more nuanced question than the marketing suggests. Open-source (Coinkite Coldcard Mk5) lets anyone (researchers, hobbyists, paranoid users) read the firmware and verify there are no backdoors. That's the strongest possible trust signal. Ellipal Titan Mini keeps source code private but compensates with paid third-party audits from and certifications like CC EAL5+/EAL6+ on the secure element. Open-source is the more transparent posture; audited closed-source can still be cryptographically airtight. Our honest take: if open-source is the deciding factor for you philosophically, pick Coinkite Coldcard Mk5 — but don't dismiss Ellipal Titan Mini as 'less secure' purely on that basis.
Can Ellipal Titan Mini be used with a desktop computer?
No — Ellipal Titan Mini is mobile-only with no Windows, macOS, or Linux app available. If you do most of your crypto work on a laptop or desktop (DeFi power users, traders, anyone running a full node), this is a real limitation, not a minor inconvenience. Coinkite Coldcard Mk5 supports all three desktop operating systems with a polished companion app, and that's the practical pick if desktop is your main interface.
Where to buy Coinkite Coldcard Mk5 at the best price?
Always buy Coinkite Coldcard Mk5 from the official Coinkite store — never from Amazon, eBay, or third-party marketplaces, even if the price looks better. Hardware wallets have been physically tampered with in the supply chain before (compromised devices shipped to unsuspecting buyers, then drained the moment funds were loaded). Buying direct from Coinkite gets you a sealed unit with full warranty, firmware integrity, and a clean chain of custody. Free shipping and occasional discounts at the source make the price difference negligible anyway.
Do Coinkite Coldcard Mk5 and Ellipal Titan Mini come with a warranty?
Yes — both ship with a manufacturer warranty (typically 1–2 years) when bought from the official store. That said, a hardware wallet warranty is mostly about hardware defects, not lost funds. If the device fails, the manufacturer will replace it — but your seed phrase or backup cards are what actually restore your crypto onto the new device. The warranty is real but secondary; what protects your funds is your backup discipline, not a piece of paper from {{wallet1}} or {{wallet2}}.
