Firmware
Firmware is the software that runs on a hardware wallet itself: it generates keys, shows transaction details on the screen and signs.
What Is a Firmware?
Firmware is the software stored and executed on the hardware wallet. It generates and protects keys, parses each transaction, shows its details on the device screen, and signs only after the user confirms. Because everything the device displays comes from firmware, its correctness matters as much as the hardware.
Vendors sign firmware releases, and the device's bootloader refuses, or loudly warns about, code without a valid vendor signature. Open-source firmware lets independent researchers review the code; reproducible builds let them confirm that the published binary was built from that code.
Updates add coin support and fix vulnerabilities. They are installed through the vendor's companion app, and having the recovery phrase backed up before updating is standard advice.
A bootloader is a small program that initializes hardware and loads the main operating system or firmware on a device, often used in blockchain hardware wallets for secure startup.

Example 1: A firmware update adds clear signing for a new token standard, so the device shows the actual action instead of raw data.
Example 2: A modified firmware image fails the bootloader's signature check, and the device refuses to run it.
Firmware Update installs new low-level software on a hardware wallet to fix bugs, enhance security, or add features in cryptocurrency devices.
